Member Benefits
Considering joining the Vancouver Tool Library? You likely have questions about what being a member even means. First and foremost, membership with the Vancouver Tool Library entitles you to access to borrow tools from our tool inventory. And, because the VTL is a cooperative, your membership also gives you the opportunity to participate in the governance and decision making of our organization – you are entitled to vote at the AGM.
Other benefits of being a member of VTL include:
- You could volunteer at the VTL
- You could attend our workshops and events
- You could teach a skill and/or propose a workshop
- You could submit a project spotlight
- You could be featured in a member/volunteer spotlight
- You could submit a Dog of VTL
- You could sit on the Board of Directors and/or be part of a Committee
- You would be part of an incredibly supportive community of people who are motivated by a vision of our community empowered by the tools and skills needed to transform their homes and communities into vibrant spaces that reflect a commitment to sustainability.
Member Fees for Individuals
The VTL offers an affordable, community-based alternative to personal tool ownership or traditional tool rental.
– Year one: $20 member share + $55 annual maintenance fee
– Year two (and beyond): $55 annual maintenance fee
– We also offer a sliding scale pricing option. Come and talk to us in the shop!
Member Fees for Organizations
We offer memberships for non-profits, cooperatives, and small businesses. This type of membership allows up to five authorized users of the organization to have access to our tool inventory and offer several special provisions that are designed to address the unique needs associated with organizations’ schedules and capacity. Base rates are as follows:
– Year one: $20 member share + $140 annual maintenance fee
– Year two (and beyond): $140 annual maintenance fee

Borrowing Tools
– Hand tools (class A) can be borrowed for no charge
– Power tools (Class B) can be borrowed for $2/day, up to 10 days
Loan Period and Late Fees
Tools may be borrowed for up to 10 days. Late fines of $1/day for hand tools, $3/day for B-Class Power Tools apply to any tool returned past its due date.
