Miter Saw

Mitre saws are dangerous power tools – they are not forgiving! They are good for specific cuts but not for others – ensure that you have the right tool for your job, and that you have the knowledge to use it safely.

SAFETY

  1. Wear proper safety gear. Appropriate shoes,
safety glasses, hearing protection. Masks are
    recommended. Gloves are not recommended
  2. Ensure that your work area is well-lit and clear
of obstacles/debris. Never use in a wet location.
  3. Keep the saw off when not cutting.
  4. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Do
    not overreach.
  5. Keep your body and face to one side of the saw
blade. Keep hands out of the line of a saw blade.
  6. Hold the stock firmly against the fence – do not
saw freehand. Cut only one piece at a time.
  7. Focus 100% on the cut. No distractions.
  8. Do not cut pieces smaller than 20cm(8”) length.
  9. Do not force the saw.
  10. Do not reach around or over moving blades.
  11. Do not retract the guard or work near the blade
    while it is spinning.
  12. Disconnect power from the unit before touching
    the blade.

Tool Check

  1. Blade-guard retracts and recovers properly.
  2. Fence is flat and not bent. Table is good.
  3. Adjustments for mitre & bevel move and lock.
  4. Blade mount – Blade is in the right direction, and
is held tightly to the arbor. No lateral wobble.
  5. Blade condition – Blade is flat and not warped.
Teeth are present, sharp, and clean.
  6. Electrics – trigger is functional, cord is safe, plug
    is safe.
  7. Running – saw sounds ok and no vibration.

Prepare to use

  1. Attach the saw firmly to a workbench or other
rigid frame, to ideally operate at waist-height.
  2. Wear proper safety gear. See section 1.
  3. Do a tool check. See section 2.
  4. Use the correct blade for your cut.
  5. Check the workpiece for obstructions or risks
(e.g. nails, staples, stones, loose knots).
  6. Lock/tighten all adjustment knobs to prevent
anything from moving during your cut.
  7. Secure the workpiece properly. Clamp or hold
one side. When cutting long pieces then support
each side to prevent shifting or falling badly.
  8. Allow motor to reach full speed before cutting.

After your cut

  1. Do not raise the saw until after the blade has
    stopped spinning.
