The Vancouver Tool Library will be officially opening on July 16th, 2011!
We’ve got a fun celebration planned for the big day – we’ll be running mini workshops on planter box building, bike maintenance, and gardening, as well as doing shop tours, signing up new members, and collecting tool donations. Enjoy live music and a$5 BBQ lunch, all proceeds support the VTL. It’s all happening from 11am – 4pm on Saturday July 16th.
It’s been a busy couple of months since we launched the website and first started talking to the broader community about this project back in March, and we couldn’t have come this far without your positive feedback, the support of our funders and founding members, and all the volunteers who have helped to develop our organization thus far. So come out to celebrate with us and check out our tool collection to get inspired!
Please help us spread the word by sharing this blog post or the facebook event page with friends and neighbours.

Our web gurus have been hard at work and we’re happy to announce that you can now sign up for your VTL membership online!
Sign up now, or check out the “UseThe Library” page on our website for all the information about membership benefits (including free access to our tool inventory, the opportunity to participate in workshops and participate in the decision making of our co-op, and your very own snazy member card!), membership fees, and to access the online membership form.
As a special thanks for supporting our launch, anyone who joins before our grand opening will have two months added to the term of their annual maintenance fee (so you get 14 months rather than the usual 12).

It’s been a busy month at 3448 Commercial Street, and the shop has really taken shape since we opened it up to you all on April 30th. We’ve been charting our progress since then… check out some of the photos taken over the past couple weeks!
The day we got the keys – a big clean up day to get ready for our Nuts and Bolts event…
After the event, our work got a bit more serious. The floors really needed some TLC. We scraped old tile, leveled the entrance area…
Applied the floor epoxy, and waited for it to dry (patience!)…
Floor finished, we’ve moved on to assembling and, even more exciting, filling the shelves.
Pretty exciting… we’re almost there! Of course, we couldn’t do this without all the support we’ve been getting from other organizations and individuals. A huge thanks goes out to The Society Promoting Environmental Conservation for generously donating a number of unused shelves to our shop. And all the tools you see in these photos have been donated by members of the public so a huge hats off to them as well!

We’re still holding our shop hours on Wednesday evenings (5-8pm) and Saturday afternoons (noon – 3pm) to give you all a chance to stop by and check in on our progress in the shop or sign up for your VTL membership. Our tool purchasing has begun now so the shop is getting exciting – lots of new toys to check out! Hope to see you there.
note that Wednesday 15th shop hours may be cancelled depending on the outcome of tonight’s game. We’re cheering for a Canucks win for more reasons than one! Check back on Tuesday to the calendar below to confirm.
Update – looks like we’re cancelling shop hours this Wednesday, June 15th. Regular hours resume Saturday June 18th!
